MY GROWTH

Prior to this experience, I had little knowledge about the pharmacy department of a hospital. I chose to volunteer at the pharmacy unit because that was the field I was interested in, and I’m really thankful for the decision I made. Through this experience, I was able to learn what it is like to work as a pharmacy technician, and I was surprised to find that I was able to work alongside them and help with most of their tasks. In the beginning, I had no idea how to use the special machines that they had and was worried that I wouldn’t be able to do much. However, I worked really hard to learn the tasks and quickly became adjusted to the job. Although I was only a volunteer, it gave me firsthand experience on working as a pharmacy technician and there were times where I almost felt like I was one of the technicians working in this job.  I really enjoyed the working environment and it definitely sparked my interest in pursuing a career in pharmacy.

Below, I’ve attached pictures of the tasks I learned how to do during my volunteering experience

Left: Medications that were bagged and approved by pharmacists have to be placed into corresponding bins to be transported to the correct unit

Middle: The Talyst machine stores medications that are used by the different units of the hospitals.

Right: High alert stickers need to be placed on Heparin to warn doctors and nurses to use it carefully.
